The United States opened Ellis Island in January of 1892. Just four months later, in April, an 18-year-old Danish immigrant with almost nothing in his pockets made his way through a myriad of invasive health and bureaucratic screenings to embark on his new life.
In the space of 11 years, he traveled to the Midwest, met the woman who would become his wife, established a family, raised money to buy land and founded the Primrose Farm where multiple generations of his family would make their home. By the time of the Great Depression, he had amassed a reserve of land and cash that enabled him to not only position the next generation of his family for success but also aid others at risk of losing their livelihoods to the financial turmoil of the time.
Harbor to Harvest is his story, and those of his 182 descendants, as told by a great-grandson with a background in research, interviewing and writing. Peter Berg was among one of the greatest migrations of people in the history of the world, and represents an American tale that captures the personal stories otherwise lost to time.
